So the past couple of days at Florida A&M have been riddled with campaigners enriching the masses with their truncated rhetoric and fancy posters and flyers and unrealistic platforms. They select their closest friends to help campaign for them unknowingly setting themselves up for failure; you can govern what you say but not what your friend says or how they say it. I have a really huge problem with these electoral candidates. Mainly because of their subliminal mud slinging tactics and lack of originality.
It has gone to show that anyone can run for office. In high school I had a very intellectual friend who was very outspoken and charismatic. He was running for his sophomore class' president's seat. His opposition was another guy who goofed off in class, hardly took anything seriously, and was a "joke". Everyone knew he was a farce and only ran for the fun of it. Our school's broadcast department gave each candidate 30 seconds to announce their intentions and a brief statement on why they were running. My friend's delivery was impeccable. His counterparts 30 seconds consisted of him eating from a bag of Cheetos. It was comical, yes, but nothing worthy of garnering votes. Or you would think. On the contrary, he was elected into office. He didn't go to any of the SGA meetings yet still kept his office because SGA didn't have a strong attendace policy. The point is, his 30 seconds of fame stood out from the rest of the candidates. That's what the people want. So give it to them.
I see candidates running for highly esteemed positions such as Mr/Mrs University yet they aren't cordial or friendly on a frequent basis. Oh yeah, when election week comes you want to give out brownies and hug people and kiss babies, but what about that time I passed you in the courtyard and just as you were about to pass me you got a text on your phone. Yeah, I know that trick too. I understand you having your bad days when you dont want to talk to people. But bad days should not turn into bad weeks! And you are supposed to be Mr/Mrs University. You are the face of our university. You are representing me as an ambassador. That's why I don't vote for fakers. Give me real.
Much blame is put on the populace too. Some of these ignorant people don't even VOTE, but they are the main ones that want to say something when something doesn't go right in the administration. Im like, FOOL you didnt vote-you didn't take part in the democratic process-so you don't have a right to say anything. They give all of these excuses like "I don't know their platform". These candidates have flyers and posters and facebook groups out the ying yang and you're telling me you dont their platform. "I need them to come to me and tell me themselves". Come on now people. Are you really that lazy? Be a concerned constituent and seek knowledge. It is not going to be handed to you. And even more, it's Black History Month. You should vote JUST BECAUSE. Thats why our race has degraded so much. We dont take initiative. We don't seek involvement. We have become complacent in society and watch as other races expound exponentially more than we have and we have been here longer than they. I digress.
Elections. Go vote. There...I Said It.
